CONNECTING CULTURES ACROSS THE GLOBE

Featuring: Pattie Moon, Program Director, Sherpa Education Project

Pattie Moon has lived many lives and in many locations as a traveler, executive, advocate, and author.  She has always been a traveler.  From her first overseas trip to study in Switzerland during high school years to the present, she continues to love to see the world. She has lived in France and Australia for years, and has traveled extensively to many other countries, always immersing herself in the local culture.

Pattie’s career started as an advertising executive in Chicago and San Francisco, working for the major firms of Needham, Harper & Steers as well as Ogilvy & Mather.  Her success in advertising allowed her to retire early and realize her priority of bringing up her two sons.  As she did so, she continued to consult on research and strategic planning for companies in the US, Canada and Australia. She now enjoys working pro bono for non profits in Steamboat Springs CO.

For the past decade, Pattie has served as program director for a Steamboat-based organization, Sherpa Education Project, whose focus is on educating girls in the Everest region of Nepal.  Pattie feels like the Sherpa are “family” in the truest sense.  She travels to Nepal regularly and stays in their homes, enjoying time with these friends of extraordinary warmth, wisdom, and gaiety of spirit.

It is Pattie’s delight to use her executive skills to manage the SEP programs. She has created special fundraisers to support the local Sherpas after the 2014 deadly avalanche on Everest, the 2015 earthquakes country-wide, and in summer 2021 a food relief program to address needs from COVID-19 and the loss of incomes in the region.

Pattie’s recent contribution to the Sherpa community is the book Tough and Cheerful: the Life and Times of Kanchha Sherpa, Last Living Member from the First Ascent of Mount Everest.  This book was first pushed in Kathmandu in 2019 and has recently been published in the USA.

Pattie’s passions and skills have allowed her to connect cultures across the globe.

G.L.O.B.A.L. Justice is pleased to feature Pattie Moon and the Sherpa Education Project at our Christmas in Asia event at the GLBL MRKT at Grace Place Church in Berthoud on December 11, 2021. We will also be featuring her book Tough and Cheerful during the month of February 2022.
